When Should You Restring Your Racket?
The ideal restringing frequency depends on several factors, including the type of racket, the strings used, your playing style, and how often you play.
General Guidelines
- A useful rule of thumb is to restring your racket as many times per year as you play each week.
- Play once a week = restring once a year
- Play twice a week = restring twice a year
- Play three times a week = restring three times a yearRackets should generally be restrung after 40–50 hours of play.
- Nylon strings typically lose tension more quickly and may need replacing after 30–40 hours of use.
- Even if you play infrequently, we recommend restringing your racket at least every 6 months, as strings naturally lose tension and elasticity over time.
- Using old or worn strings can negatively affect performance and may increase the risk of injuries such as tennis elbow, shoulder pain, and arm discomfort.
- Choosing the right strings and restringing regularly helps maintain optimal performance, comfort, and control on court.
String Types
Synthetic Gut
A versatile and popular option offering an excellent balance of playability, comfort, and durability. Used by approximately 60–70% of players.
Multifilament
One of the most comfortable strings available. Its high elasticity creates a larger sweet spot and excellent feel, making it particularly suitable for players experiencing tennis elbow or arm discomfort. While highly playable, it is generally less durable than other string types.
Polyester Strings
Not all polyester strings are the same. Modern polyester strings are available in a wide range of constructions and performance characteristics to suit different playing styles and preferences.
Some polyester strings are designed for:
-
Maximum control – ideal for players who take big swings and want greater precision.
-
Enhanced spin – shaped or textured strings that help generate extra bite on the ball.
-
Additional power – softer polyester strings that provide more ball speed while maintaining control.
-
Improved comfort – softer co-polyester strings that are easier on the arm while still offering the benefits of polyester.
With so many options available, choosing the right polyester string can make a significant difference to your game. We stock a wide range of premium polyester strings and can help you find the best match for your playing style, ability level, and comfort requirements.
Natural Gut
For players looking for the ultimate in comfort, feel, and performance, natural gut remains the gold standard. It offers exceptional power, comfort, tension maintenance, and touch, making it a favourite among professional and advanced players.
While natural gut is a premium option, many players find the enhanced feel and playability well worth the investment. It can also be combined with polyester strings in a hybrid setup to provide the perfect blend of comfort, power, and control.
Poly Mix (Hybrid)
A combination of polyester strings in the mains and synthetic gut. This setup offers improved durability while maintaining comfort and playability.
String Brands We Use
We stock and string with premium brands including:
Babolat, Wilson, Tecnifibre, Solinco, Yonex, Quaila and Head.
String Tension
String tension refers to how tightly the strings are installed in the racket. Every racket manufacturer recommends a specific tension range, typically between 50–60 lbs.
While it is possible to exceed the manufacturer's recommended tension, doing so may void the racket warranty.
General Tension Guidelines
-
Higher tension = More control
-
Lower tension = More power
Players who naturally generate plenty of power often prefer higher tensions for added control and precision. Beginners or players seeking extra power may benefit from lower tensions.
If you're unsure what tension is right for you, we recommend starting in the middle of your racket's recommended tension range. You can then make adjustments based on your experience. For example, if you'd like more power, reduce the tension by 2–3 lbs at your next restring.
